The paper, titled “Multifunctional Coil Technique for Alignment-Agnostic and Rx Coil Size-Insensitive Efficiency Enhancement for Wireless Power Transfer Applications”, showcases a multifunctional coil technology.

In this paper, a technology utilizing auxiliary coils is demonstrated that can maintain high efficiency even in cases of extreme misalignment between transmitting and receiving coils in a wireless power transfer system. Despite being structurally the simplest among the  auxiliary coil technologies reported so far,  this is the first reported case of a multifunctional coil technology that allows compensation not only in structurally asymmetric systems where the auxiliary coil is attached only to the transmitting coil, but also in size asymmetric structures where the size of the receiving coil is smaller than that of the transmitting coil. With such enhanced practicality, it is anticipated that this technology will find applications in various wireless charging systems where misalignment is frequent in the future.

This project was led by graduate student Miss Seoyeon Yoon under the supervision of Prof. Yongshik Lee.
