Professor Ahn Jong-hyun, Ph.D candidate Kim Beom Jin, and Anh Tuan Hoang presented a smart image sensor technology inspired by the human retina to Nature Electronics (IF 33.686, top 0.2%) using MoS2, a two-dimensional semiconductor.
The human retina can change the light sensitivity according to the brightness of the light, so that objects can be well identified in a dark and bright environment. Professor Ahn Jong-hyun's team developed an image sensor that simulates the function of the human retina. The present sensor has the advantage of being able to recognize objects in a wider luminous range than conventional silicon-based image sensors. This study was conducted in collaboration with a research team of Professor Yang Chai of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
