Recently, the wireless energy harvesting has received a lot of attention. In this talk, the basics and the fundamentals of wireless energy harvesting are discussed. As the most general form, we will consider the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), which combines the wireless information transfer (WIT) and the wireless power transfer (WPT) in a single unified framework. The structure of the SWIPT receiver is first discussed. Then the fundamental performance limit characterized by the rate-energy (R-E) tradeoff is presented. For Gaussian inputs, the R-E tradeoff is reviewed under the average power constraints. Then, for discrete inputs, the R-E tradeoff is investigated under the average and peak power constraints. From the mathematical analysis and numerical results, we obtain useful insights into the fundamentals of the SWIPT.
