As the dramatic increase in the number of mobile devices, future 5G cellular networks are facing the challenging task of proportionately increasing their capacity. Despite some cutting-edge capacity-approaching techniques, the limited licensed spectrum is still the principal bottleneck for capacity improvement. To tackle this problem, a new standard, currently being developed within 3GPP and formally called licensed assisted access (LAA), has been proposed for LTE systems to operate on unlicensed bands. Since LTE has many advanced techniques, it can achieve a higher spectral efficiency and provide better QoS than the WiFi system in the unlicensed band. However, since unlicensed bands are already used by the widely-deployed WiFi networks, the major challenge is how to design fair and efficient coexistence mechanisms between LTE and WiFi. In this talk, I will introduce some recent results on the unlicensed LTE, including both spectral efficiency and energy efficiency design aspects.
