Title : Wafer-scale phased array at millimeter-wave frequency with integrated coupled antenna

Abstract:

Phased array antennas has become an essential part of millimeter-wave transceiver for their beam-forming and beam-steering capabilities. In order to overcome high path loss and to enable spatial multiplexing at high frequencies, large number of elements are desired to have higher EIRP and narrower beamwidth. However, most of integrated phased array implementations adopt linear arrangements and off-chip antennas, therefore limiting scalability with the drawbacks such as non-uniform distance to the antenna, lossy signal transition, expensive packaging technologies, and the need for equiphase signal distribution networks. In this talk, a two-dimensionally scalable phased array architecture with electro-magnetically coupled antenna with one-to-one correspondence to each element is proposed, and a 4-by-4 phased array transmitter at 108 - 114 GHz in 0.12 um SiGe BiCMOS technology is demonstrated as a proof-of-concept. With high-efficiency EM-coupled antenna layer, the phased array transmitter demonstrates beam-steering in both E-plane and H-plane, and the measured EIRP is 24.5 dBm at broadside at 112 GHz with the DC current consumption of 1.8A from 1.9V supply.
