세미나 제목 : Biomedical microsystems for neuro interface

내용 :

Miniaturized devices based on Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) offer competitive advantages over conventional bio/medical tools for neuroscience applications, such as small size, low cost due to batch fabrication, and CMOS compatibility. For example, miniaturized devices such as neural probes and ultrasound transducers have opened up new means for neuroscientists to observe and control our brain. This talk will first introduce multi-functional MEMS silicon neural probes that allow not only recording of neural signals in vivo but also provide two stimulation modalities to control brain circuits: chemical and optical stimulation. The fabricated multi-functional neural probes successfully detected neural spike signals from individual neurons from different areas of brains such as hippocampus and thalamus regions. In addition, absence seizure was successfully induced and monitored by delivering drugs through microfluidic channels embedded in the neural probe. Using a transgenic mouse, neurons at hippocampus region were also successfully activated using blue light in vivo where distinctive changes in the number of neural spikes were observed at the presence of light. With active collaboration with neuroscientists, the presented multi-functional neural probe is expected to open up a wide range of applications in neuroscience. The second half of this talk will discuss the use of ultrasound for neuromodulation with a focus on miniaturized ultrasound transducers. The functionalities and potential applications of these devices will be discussed.
