A microgrid is a special category of distributed generation and load systems that is distinguished by its size and the ability to operate independently as a self-contained power system. Energy sources in a microgrid vary in their output format and are commonly interfaced through power electronic converters. Thus, microgrids may have numerous multi-functional power electronic converters connecting sources, loads, and storage to the system. Systems where converters are the interface between many of the main sources of energy and load centers have the ability to direct the flow of energy if the control of the converters is properly coordinated.
A new methodology will be presented for power electronic building block (PEBB) based converters and systems of converters, where individual PEBB modules are coupled with embedded controllers interconnected on a distributed multi-hop communication network to enable fast converter system coordination in microgrids.
