Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has obtained substantial attention as an encouraging approach to facilitate the collaborative transmission schemes. One of the challenges in the C-RAN architecture is capacity expansion after an initial network deployment. It is well known that the densification of radio nodes is an effective means of capacity increase. In the context of C-RAN, installation of additional optical cables tends to bring about immense expense, and would be cumbersome when the geographic location is inappropriate for fiber placement. Wireless fronthauling can be an alternative, but it is not always feasible to establish direct connectivity between BBU pool and RRHs. To tackle these hurdles, we consider a new architecture, namely partly wireless C-RAN (PW-CRAN), in which additional radio nodes are wirelessly connected to the adjacent RRHs when wireless fronthauling to the BBU pool is not available. Due to the delay introduced by the newly connected wireless nodes, the operation of PW-CRAN requires different approaches compared to that of the typical C-RAN. A key question is under which condition it is beneficial to stick to the global coordination, and when the extra wireless nodes need to be treated in a separate manner. We provide quantified guidelines on the cooperation strategy of PW-CRAN.
