This talk presents the design method of cellular base station antennas using tri-plate waveguide. Array antenna performance is dominated by transmission loss of feed network. Conducting loss increased in thin dielectric substrate is removed by thick waveguide and dielectric loss is also eliminated by air-filled structure. These factors are also effective for microstrip lines. At first, the loss factors are discussed by comparing those of hollow rectangular waveguide. After reducing transmission loss of tri-plate waveguide, the parallel plate mode excitation is another drawback to achieve high gain antenna. To suppress or utilize the parallel plate mode is also discussed. As applications of tri-plate waveguide, cellular base station antennas are presented in detail to design sector and spot beam antennas.
