With ever progressing high-temperature superconductor (HTS) together with improving cryocooler technologies, an HTS magnet has become viable for biomedical applications such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and power electric machinery applications such as motor and generator. Especially since MIT FBML first came up with an idea of no-insulation (NI) HTS magnet technology and validated it in 2010, the NI technology has been widely used and actively studied to enable an HTS magnet to be more compact, higher field, higher energy density, stable, and affordable. Included for this presentation are: 1) an overview of HTS magnet technology, research history and progress in power electric machinery applications and biomedical applications; 2) design, fabrication, and test results of the high-field, high energy density NI HTS magnet; 3) an innovative solid nitrogen cooling method for HTS magnet; and 4) research activities currently under way in the FBML/PSFC at MIT.
