Hearing loss is the biggest risk factor for tinnitus, a ringing ear. Hearing loss-related neuronal changes in the auditory cortex have been hypothesized as the mechanism underlying tinnitus. However, due to the comorbidity of tinnitus and hearing loss, it has been difficult to differentiate between neural correlates of tinnitus and consequences of hearing loss. We found that cortical map expansion was correlated with hearing loss; by contrast, reduced cortical inhibition was with tinnitus.

 

It will be tested with a wearable electronic that the reduced cortical inhibition by tinnitus will be rescued by promoting map reorganization. Needle types of electronics for recording and generating brain signals have been used in basic and clinical neuroscience research, yet are limited to diagnose and treat brain diseases due to their spatial and temporal restriction. Currently proposing technology integrates a flexible graphene electronic into an array of electrocorticography (ECoG) which samples a large area of brain signals (for diagnosis purpose) and delivers electrical pulses through a connected stimulator (for treatment purpose). The electronic can be applicable for various brain diseases such as tinnitus, epilepsy, depression and schizophrenia. Currently, we are able to record spatial and temporal brain activities, using our custom-made epidermal electronic. Our current success would herald a new generation of diagnostic and therapeutic brain-machine interface devices.
